» NAME: Yusuke Kitagawa
» CANON: Persona 5
» CANON POINT: December 24th
» AGE: 17
» SETTING: Persona 5 / Yusuke
» SHORT DESCRIPTION: artistic, eccentric, dramatic, proud, driven
» INFLUENTIAL EVENTS:
The Path to Art: When Yusuke was a child, he came upon a painting that would inspire him to pursue art; "Sayuri", a portrait of a woman wearing an enigmatic expression. So inspired was he by the painting's beauty and emotion, Yusuke would cite "Sayuri" as the source of his passion for art and the painting that kept him going throughout his life. Originally attributed to his Sensei and foster father, a well-known celebrity artist named Madarame, "Sayuri" was Yusuke's reason for living... as well as the crutch that tied him to Madarame's abusive household. Many apprentices studied under Madarame, but all of them left eventually, citing Madarame's horrendous treatment and frequent theft of ideas to use for his own gain. Only Yusuke remained, steadfast yet painfully loyal to Madarame because he could not turn his back on the man who raised him and created the painting that inspired him to become an artist. Yusuke remained dedicated to the pursuit of art, for better or for worse.
Meeting His Muse: One day, Yusuke spotted a girl in a crowded Subway station and envisioned a painting that he believed would become his magnum opus. Heedless of decorum and how the girl was deeply freaked out by a stranger following her, he confronted her. The girl was Ann, secretly a member of the Phantom Thieves. He begged her to become a model for his next art piece, and she (and her companions) were understandably confused. In an attempt to entice her into agreeing to model for him, he gave them tickets to see a local art exhibition by none other than his Sensei, Madarame. This was how the Phantom Thieves begin to realize the truth behind the celebrity, and the truth of the painful lie Yusuke lived in.
Sensei's True Face: The illusion of Madarame's brilliance was shattered thanks to the Phantom Thieves. They uncovered the real Madarame: a serial plagiarist, a despicable man who considered art a mere tool to gain wealth--and his apprentices as livestock to be slaughtered for his own profit. Once exposed, Yusuke found his whole world view turned upside-down, and questioned everything he believed about himself, his art, and the man he once called both 'Sensei' and father. In spite of this crisis, the Phantom Thieves stood by Yusuke and vowed not to let Madarame get away with deceiving and using people any longer. Yusuke realized that he has been lying to himself for so long about what was going on, because he was afraid to face the truth and admit that the man he owed his livelihood and inspiration to had been nothing but a cheating, selfish, vain fraud.
Awakening & Defeat: Yusuke's ability to admit to himself that he had been willfully blind to Madarame's crimes was the catalyst to his Persona Awakening. Yusuke became a member of the Phantom Thieves and swore to bring Madarame to justice with his newfound power. In the final confrontation with Madarame, it was revealed that the painting "Sayuri" was not made by Madarame at all, but was yet another stolen work he plagiarized. The original painter is Yusuke's deceased mother, and the reason for the woman's engimatic smile is that she is holding a baby--her son--in her arms, a detail that was obscured by Madarame to make the painting more appealing to the general public. As Madarame shamelessly admitted how he inherited the painting by ignoring Yusuke's mother having a seizure, Yusuke realized that he can never forgive Madarame for his actions. After defeating Madarame and changing his heart, Yusuke finally left behind the life he lived before, and vowed to set out to see the world freely, and to create art on his own terms.
Finding His Resolve: After the incident with Madarame, Yusuke realized that he needed a better understanding of human emotion in order to paint his best work and get out of his artist's block. He entreated Ren, a fellow Phantom Thief, to help him in this endeavor, and gradually came to a better understanding of both the human heart and himself. However, he also began to worry that he would never be able to paint from a pure place again, because he feared that the darkness in Madarame's heart would come to affect him, too. When offered the opportunity to be sponsored by a wealthy patron in exchange for marketing his image as a "brooding, tortured artist", Yusuke angrily rejected both the offer and the idea that he should have to sell himself to survive. But without income, he knew he would struggle for the rest of his life. With the support of his friends, Yusuke was able to reconcile these conflicts by affirming that there is no shame in doing things for his own survival, so long as he continues to paint from the heart.
» FIT: Yusuke tends to accept strange things happening around him more often than not, having experienced firsthand the weirdness of the Metaverse (the cognitive world where the Phantom Thieves are able to steal hearts). It's not that he doesn't find things unusual or worth questioning, but he doesn't tend to dwell on them unless they interest him specifically. Yusuke has difficulty thinking along the same lines as most people, and often clashes with or dismisses those who don't meet his aesthetic standards. This can lead to conflict but it can also lead to interesting and unusual (and memorable) encounters. He's intelligent, but more than that he's creative and observant, and that can be a valuable asset. Overall, I think Yusuke will be good for the survival and exploration elements of the game, while having some initial difficulties with the space station setting. It's unfamiliar to him, but the mystery of the station's existence and what happened to the world before will be plenty intriguing to him.
That having been said, he's definitely going to have trouble with motion sickness living on a space station. He gets carsick easily.
» POWERS: Yusuke is an accomplished artist, but his most notable special power is his Persona, Kamu Susano-O. Kamu Susano-O works like any other Persona, and grants primarily ice and physical attack-type abilities.
